Popular Hair Straightening Products Allegedly Linked to Uterine Cancer
If you’ve ever used Dark & Lovely, Motions, Just for Me, or Optimum brand hair straighteners/relaxers, it’s recommended that you cease use because a new lawsuit alleges a potential link between them and the development of uterine cancer.

About the Lawsuit
The alleged cancer connection was first brought to light after a resident from Alabama, who had been using these products since 1993, said that the manufacturers failed to warn consumers about the toxic chemicals found inside these products. Worse, the lawsuit alleges that these toxic chemicals are known to increase the risk of certain diseases, including but not limited to uterine fibroids, uterine cancer, and breast cancer.
The lawsuit goes on to say that while the manufacturers either knew or should have known about these cancer-causing chemicals, they engaged in “callous, reckless, willful, depraved indifference to the health, safety and welfare” of the plaintiff. Furthermore, the claim states that these hair straightening products specifically targeted young Black children, like the plaintiff, who did not know they were exposing themselves to an increased risk of developing uterine cancer later in life.
The plaintiff in this lawsuit started using various hair relaxers at the age of 10 and was later diagnosed with uterine cancer in December 2020.
Cancer-Causing Connection
These hair-relaxing products listed above have been on the market for decades, targeting individuals who wish to get rid of their natural curls. And, many assumed they were safe because there was no indication of risk.
However, recent studies, such as one conducted by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, not only found cancer-causing chemicals in these products, but they also warned people that continued use of chemical hair relaxers may lead to uterine cancer. In fact, the study showed those who used these products developed uterine cancer at a rate three times higher than those who didn’t.
As we head into 2023, it’s widely believed that many lawsuits will soon be coming forward linked to the connection between these types of hair products and breast and uterine cancer diagnoses. If you or someone you love was recently diagnosed with cancer after the continued use of popular hair relaxers, contact the team at Drazin and Warshaw, P.C. as soon as possible.
