IKEA Recalls Safety Gates due to Risk of Slip & Fall Accidents
IKEA’s safety gates might not be so safe. IKEA, the global seller of ready-to-assemble furniture and other home accessories, recently announced a product recall of approximately 80,000 safety gates due to a risk of fall-related injuries.
IKEA is issuing the recall after receiving reports of 55 accidents involving the safety gates, with at least 10 people worldwide sustaining related injuries due to the defective safety gates. The injuries suffered by consumers of the products are said to include lacerations and bruising, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Additionally, two small children reportedly suffered serious head injuries, including concussions, as a result of slip & falls caused by the defective IKEA products.
The potential safety issue with the gates is that the locking mechanism on the gates can reportedly slide open without warning, making the gate ineffective because it can unlock by itself. This poses a significant fall hazard to small children – and it is apparently kids who have beared the brunt of the injuries sustained as a result of the defective safety gates.
The recall affects roughly 80,000 items and specifically applies to the Patrull Safety Gate, the Patrull Klamma Safety Gate, and the Patrull Fast Safety Gate, as well as safety gate extensions for all three of those IKEA product lines. The recalled items have been sold by IKEA since 1995.
In New Jersey, there are two IKEA locations. Anyone who has purchased one of the recalled IKEA safety gates is asked to immediately cease use of the product and contact the company for further details. The recalled products can be returned to stores for a full refund, with or without a sales receipt.
