Popular Baby Brand, Boppy, Recalling 3 Million Newborn Loungers Due to Suffocation Risk
Back in June of 2021, a congressional report learned that the popular baby brand, Fisher-Price, ignored warnings about the dangers of their Rock ‘n Play products. A recall wasn’t done until four children died. Unfortunately, another popular baby brand, Boppy, is in the news for a similar reason.
What Happened
According to a recent report, Boppy Co. plans to recall more than 3 million newborn loungers after eight children suffocated in them between the years of 2015 and 2020. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), all of the children rolled over onto their sides or stomachs and were unable to breathe.
The CSPC issued a warning to all parents and owners of this product to suspend use immediately and contact Boppy Co. for a full refund. Anyone seeking a refund should contact the company at 800-416-1355. The items included in this recall include:
- Boppy Original Newborn Loungers
- Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers
- Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers
All of these products have been on the market since 2004 and up until recently, sold at many popular brick-and-mortar stores and online retailers.
Not the First Time a Recall Has Happened
Unfortunately, this is not the first time Boppy Co. has had to issue a recall due to an infant suffocation risk. In the summer of 2019, the popular baby brand had to recall 14,000 head and neck support accessories because they may have tilted a child’s head too far forward due to being overstuffed.
Official Statement Released by Boppy Co.
Boppy Co. released an official statement on the deaths and recall, stating, “We are devastated to hear of these tragedies. Boppy is committed to doing everything possible to safeguard babies, including communicating the safe use of our products to parents and caregivers and educating the public about the importance of following all warnings and instructions and the risks associated with unsafe sleep practices for infants. The lounger was not marketed as an infant sleep product and includes warnings against unsupervised use.”
