More People Coming Forward with Allegations of Deaths in New Jersey Surgical Centers
One recent 67-year-old patient who reported to the center for a colonoscopy experienced a dropped pulse and a decreased oxygen level during the course of the procedure. That patient passed away just two days later. One individual who went in for a seven-minute endoscopy to manage his stomach pain, never left the facility because he did not wake up after the surgery. There are thousands of procedures performed across all of the same-day surgical centers throughout New Jersey. These are operating facilities pre-standing not attached to a hospital and may sometimes take on complicated medical procedures without the support of the staff and resources available at a fully equipped hospital.
New Jersey safety reporting began in 2008 and dozens of patients have died at those centers since then. More than a thousand patients have also suffered preventable injuries or become comatose. There are more same-day surgical centers in New Jersey than Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and New York.
These states have a total of 298 such centers. Doctors may recommend a surgical center directly to a patient because of the ease of scheduling, efficiency and higher reimbursement from Medicare and insurance companies. However, this can come at a catastrophic risk to the patient who may never realize the potential injuries he or she could suffer.
