Drazin and Warshaw, P.C. unequivocally condemns violence, hatred, and bigotry in all forms. We stand with the Jersey City Jewish community and the fallen Jersey City Policeman during this difficult time. Learn more about what happened and how the community is responding below.
What Happened in Jersey City?
On December 10th, police were called out to the Jersey City Kosher Supermarket after several reports of a shooter. Detective Joseph Seals was the first officer on the scene. He intercepted one of the shooters near the Bay View Cemetery, but the suspect fatally shot the highly respected officer. He then proceeded to make his way to the supermarket.
Once there, the shooter opened fire on civilians. Two shooters eventually barricaded themselves in the supermarket while opening fire on both police and citizens. Gunfire was exchanged for hours before police were able to deescalate the situation. Both shooters were fatally shot during the gunfire battle.
In addition to the fallen police officer, the shooters took the lives of three citizens: Douglas Miguel Rodriguez, Moshe Deutsch and Mindy Ferencz. Authorities suspect the specific supermarket, which is frequented by the Jewish community, was targeted by the shooters.
The Community’s Response
A GoFundMe page has been set up by the Jersey City Police Officers Benevolent Association to support Detective Seals’ family. So far, over $600,000 has been raised.
